Buying a press brake or laser cutting machine from overseas raises two questions that have nothing to do with the machine: will it arrive undamaged, and who helps me once it lands?
A CNC machine is heavy, precision-aligned, and sensitive to moisture and vibration. Here is how it should be prepared, shipped, and supported.
What Goes Wrong Without Proper Packing
A container can spend 30–45 days at sea through humidity swings, salt air, and port handling. The common failures are predictable:
- Surface rust on machined surfaces from condensation
- Impact damage to control panels and back gauge assemblies
- Shifted loads from inadequate bracing
- Missing accessories when tooling isn't packed and listed separately
These are packing failures, not shipping-line failures — and all are avoidable.
The Six-Step Packing and Shipping Process
1. Machine Cleaning — Machined surfaces get anti-rust treatment. This is your last practical window for a pre-shipment inspection or video test, since opening a crate means repacking.
2. Protective Wrapping — Moisture-resistant film plus desiccant, with foam protection on the control system and gauges. Tooling and spare parts are packed separately and labeled.
3. Wooden Case Packaging — Fumigated export case, machine bolted to a reinforced base. ISPM 15 compliance matters: non-compliant wood can be quarantined at the destination port.
4. Container Loading — Crate braced and lashed so it cannot shift.

5. Global Delivery — Documents protect you at this stage: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, fumigation certificate, CE where required. Clarify Incoterms before confirming the order — EXW, FOB, CIF, and DAP assign freight, insurance, and clearance very differently.
6. Safe Arrival — Photograph the seal and crate before signing. Confirm crane capacity and floor load rating in advance.
Support After the Machine Arrives
Installation — Positioning, leveling, electrical connection, and calibration. Leveling is not optional on a press brake; an unlevel machine produces inconsistent bend angles regardless of build quality.
Voltage is the most common pre-installation problem. Machines are built for 220V, 380V, 415V, or 440V, and this is fixed at the custom machine specification stage — not after delivery.
Training — Control operation, program setup, tooling changes, safety, and daily maintenance. Confirm whether documentation comes in your operators' working language.
Technical support — Ask specifics: support hours and time zone, remote diagnostic access, regional service presence, response time for critical faults.
Spare parts — Confirm wear items and service intervals, stock vs. made-to-order, urgent lead time, and whether standard components use brands you can source locally. Original spare parts supply is where long-term ownership cost is decided.
